The retreats
Traditionally, yoga is practised in quiet secluded surroundings, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. For quickest progress, there should be a minimum of distractions, the air should be clean and the water pure. The environment should be conducive to a healthy positive lifestyle and spiritually uplifting. These conditions are found at Shanti Griha. |

Astanga Yoga Retreat
with Brian Cooper
14-21 June and 16-23 August 2008
£450 |
Many people find it difficult to practise yoga daily. The pressures of everyday life, the numerous distractions and the lack of a proper space in which to practise all contribute to the difficulties. And yet, when yoga is practised every day, the benefits are immediate and long-lasting. You will find that a week of occupying body and mind with good exercise, wholesome food, fresh air, and a simple, satisfying routine will leave you energised and centred and will give you an insight into how rewarding yoga can be. The number of participants for these yoga intensives is limited to eight, ensuring everyone receives personal attention.
The yoga retreats are conceived to allow the students to develop their true potential and have the time and space to obtain the benefits of a daily practice. The pollution-free environment, combined with a yogic diet, cleanses and purifies. Meditation clears the mind, and the daily asana practice strengthens the body. Pranayama is introduced through the week. The programme follows a schedule similar to that of many ashrams. The day starts with a short meditation and chanting, followed by a session of Astanga Yoga which is suitable for all levels, including complete beginners. This is followed by brunch and Karma Yoga (optional). The late afternoon yoga session will cover a range of topics including the six Kriyas, Pranayama, useful techniques for asana practice, and yogic philosophy and science. This will be followed by dinner. One afternoon will be free for those who would like to go on longer walks or climb the nearby peaks. The evenings are free for reflection, star-gazing or just sitting by the open fire in the living-room.
